Shortly before 5:00 pm, Sunday, June 14, 2009, Guilford County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to 6047 Burlington Road, Gibsonville, to a domestic call involving a gun. The victim had notified her boyfriend and father that she was being held hostage by Tommy Joe Maness, who was armed with a .22 caliber rifle with a scope.
Deputies set up a perimeter around the residence and through text messaging and some limited phone calls, they were able to determine the victim and the suspect were out of the house and in the woods. The victim advised Sheriff’s personnel that she was free of the suspect and she was ordered to run in the opposite direction of the suspect and towards deputies. Sheriff’s Deputies soon located the suspect and took him into custody without incident, and also located the victim shortly afterward. The .22 caliber rifle was recovered from the woods. Tommy Joe Maness, white male, dob 01/07/1978, 3615 Old 421, Liberty, NC, was charged with Assault by Pointing a Gun, Kidnapping, and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon.
