Approximately fifty law enforcement officers participated in this effort from the following agencies in Guilford County: High Point Police Department, Greensboro Police Department, N.C. State Highway Patrol, A & T University Police Department, UNCG Police Department, and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. The Governor’s Highway Safety Program designated the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office to be the coordinating agency for all ‘Booze It and Lose It’ checkpoints in Guilford County. Sheriff BJ Barnes appointed Sgt. Mark Busam to coordinate this effort with other law enforcement agencies. Each checkpoint is a planned event that utilizes the ‘B.A.T. Mobile’ (Breath Alcohol Testing), provided by North Carolina Forensic Tests for Alcohol (FTA). Inside, individuals are breath tested, and a Magistrate holds court to determine probable cause for offenses presented. Individuals unable to meet the Magistrate’s conditions for release are transported to jail by the Sheriff’s Office at the end of the night. Members of MADD and PUSH were present and provided drinking water, soft drinks, and food for law enforcement. |
