Explorer Post 592 is a great way to begin the preparation process to become a law enforcement officer. Knowledge gained through training gives you an understanding of the role a Law Enforcement Officer plays in society.

The Explorer Program is not only for those who wish to pursue careers in Law Enforcement, but it offers many opportunities in other areas as well. These areas help to improve the quality of life in the community we live.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office is the sponsor of Explorer Post 592, a law enforcement education and community service program chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. The Sheriff's Office follows the rules and guidelines set forth by the Boy Scouts of America for all youth organizations in the operation of Explorer Post 592.

There are two levels of Explorer Post 592:

I. Explorers

Explorers are members who are of age 14-21 who may participate in ALL aspects of the Post.

II. Learning for Life (LOL)

Learning for Life are members from the ages of 11 through 13. They wear the same uniform as explorers and are subject to the same requirements. The only things they CANNOT participate in are the ride along program and the DWI checkpoint program.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must have parent’s permission if under the age of 18 to participate.
• Must be enrolled in school (or actively home-schooled) or have graduated.
• If in school you must maintain a grade point average of 2.0.
• Must have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor, under indictment for felony or serious misdemeanor, or on probation for any criminal activity.
• Must be willing to participate in training, public service, and social activities.
• Be willing to obey all rules of Explorer Post 592, and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
• Must be mentally and physically capable of participating in the community service and training activities of Explorer post 592.

Explorer Post 592 normally meets on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7:00pm-9:00pm. Occasionally this schedule will be adjusted to meet training and service requirements. Any explorer missing a meeting is required to notify their assigned squad leader. All explorers should maintain a commitment of at least 10 hours per month including meeting time.

When an explorer has satisfied the membership requirements, he/she may participate in the ride along program. This program allows the opportunity to see officers in action on a first-hand basis.
